Finally! Some talented people have created a place where you can request a makeup appointment for an event, wedding or school ball and are shown all the available makeup artists in your area. Beauty Book! It’s such an awesome concept that I’m super excited to be signed up to. As a freelancer whats better than having more exposure? And increase your chances of booking up your calendar with paying clients… So with the launch of Beauty Book it got me thinking. What’s some advice I can give for becoming a successful Freelance Makeup Artist, here are my top 10 tips.

Practice, practice, practice! Grab anyone and everyone who’s willing to let you put makeup on their face and practice different makeup looks on them. Try and use a broad range of ages so you get used to different skin types and textures. There is now not a skin type, eye shape, ethnicity, age or personality type which phases me when I go to a makeup job and I owe that to the 8 years I have been working in the industry. Making mistakes along the way can be a blessing in disguise because you learn a great deal from them and then know how to tackle the situation better in the future. Also be open to receiving honest feedback from your practice models so you can fine tune your skills.

Customer service is important. Having your makeup done by a Makeup Artist is a luxury service, treat it like so. Be prompt when replying to emails and messages and don’t just talk money, it’s nice when you take an interest in your client and why they might be booking you.

Always have a goal in mind and make sure every decision you make is pushing you closer to that goal. Being able to look back and tick off all the goals you have achieved is super motivating and makes you realise that you can actually do anything you put your mind to. My last goal was to become a full time freelancer from November last year and I only really just realised that I’ve achieved my goal for the past 6 months! Time to up my game…

Keep learning. I am constantly up-skilling, learning new trends, and researching what’s going on in the makeup world. If you're really passionate about being a makeup artist then this won’t feel like a chore. It’s important to stay current in an industry that is forever changing.

Learn the gift of the gab. Teach yourself to multi task by holding a conversation with your client and doing their makeup at the same time, it’s easier said than done. Being able to chat while you’re working is actually a great way to put your client at ease, especially on a big day like her wedding.

Network. Form relationships with other freelancers, it can be a lonely job at times not having work mates. It’s nice to have a group of like minded friends to bounce ideas off, keep you motivated and to be able to pass jobs on to when you're already booked. It’s a way better service to your client to be able to recommend another artist you know is going to do a great job.

Don’t sit back and expect jobs to just come to you. It’s easy to justify a lack of work by coming up with a myriad of excuses, trust me I’ve been there! Once you realise that you're the only person who can influence your work load and that there are plenty of things you can be doing to get your name out there, then you can start working on ideas to promote your business.

Be authentic. Develop your own signature style. It’s so nice when people start to book you because they have fallen in love with your work and not because you were the first person they clicked on in a google search.

Use social media to your advantage. Spend time planning your social media content and only post pics that you're super proud of. Social media takes up a lot of time and effort but eventually it will have it’s rewards.

Take advantage of the new booking platform Beauty Book. I wish something like this existed when I first started freelancing, it surely would have helped me gain more clients, especially in the early days!
